Filed under: Buzz, Elections, US Presidential Elections — Yoav Pridor @ 5:54 pm
This week on “US Presidential Elections Buzz”, we’ll take a look at the chatter rank of the top hopefuls in both parties. In addition, we’ll find the shortcut to deciding who to vote for.

Omgili Weekly Hopeful Buzz Standings

Only one significant change in the Omgili Buzz Standings for this week. Its on the Republican side, where Fred Thompson moved up to third place, Sending John McCain down to Fourth and rapidly gaining on Giuliani.
Here are the Omgili Buzz Graphs for the passing week:

Elections for lazy people

Looking at the conceptual bubble (A Term cloud of the topics most associated with the search term) for some of the candidates, this week, I found that unlike in previous weeks, the top of the list was comprised of “The Issues”. In some cases it looked like a campaign roster. When looking at Barack Obama’s conceptual bubble, these terms were all in the top 10: Death Penalty, Assault Weapons Ban, Iran Sanctions, Same Sex Marriage, Abortion Rights, ANWR Drilling, Universal Healthcare, Embryonic Stem Cells.
I looked for the reason behind this change and quickly found it. A lot of the discussions were actually debating issues like “Abortion Rights” and “Death Penalty” and most of them referred to this site that helps lazy people decide on a candidate. The application on the site, asks you where you stand on the main issues, and then tells you who is the candidate that fits your positions best.
This site bases it’s application on a Candidate/Issue table from another site .
Voting has never been easier (-:

Weekly Buzz

Filed under: Buzz — Yoav Pridor @ 9:12 pm
Pop culture rules this week! Last week, video games took the lead in the online discussion. This week we have some additional breeds of Pop culture at the top of the Omgili Buzz Cloud.

San Diego

San Diego is usually mentioned in the discussion sphere with relation to sports. Its either something about the Padres or something about the chargers. So when I found “San Diego” at the top of the Buzz Cloud I figured I should look for some sporting event if I want to find the cause. Wrong!!! I searched for the terms most associated with San Diego in the past week and it hit me in the face with a great big POWWW!?!@?!
This coming weekend is Comic Con weekend in San Diego. That, of course, is the worlds biggest comic book convention, and fittingly, the buzz is huge.
Here are a few comic facts:

  1. Comic Con is a 4 day comic tradition, that started in the basement of the U.S. Grant hotel in 1970, with an estimated attendance of 300 people. Comic Con 2006 was hosted, as usual, at the San Diego convention center, and hosted 137,000 people.
  2. The best-selling comic book of all times was the first copy of Todd McFarlane’s
“Spider Man” (For marvel comics), that hit the stands September 1990. It was an immediate hit and sold 2.5 million copies.
  3. People who are lucky enough to get tickets to this event, usually go there dressed up as their favorite comic hero (or villain). Comic Con holds a grand mascaraed ball every year.

Homer and the sex God

Looking on the “News” tab on Omgili Buzz, I found this amazing story, at the top of the chart. No wonder so many people referred to it and discussed it. It has all the makings of a great story: Sex, Intrigue, foreign lands, controversy…and Homer Simpson. Read it, its hilarious.

The Simpsons Movie

The Simpsons movie was released in the states on the 21st of July (Saturday), and the buzz has begun. This will definitely be a part of next weeks chatter charts. From what I’m reading so far, people are loving it. Here are some discussions from the day after the launch.

Your Football Career

Like last week, a video game made it o the top of the Omgili Buzz Chart this week as well. This time it’s NCAA ‘08. The hottest and newest in American football video games. As it turns out, the game was launched this week (July 21st ), and there are numerous discussions and arguments about the game and it’s features.
One thing fascinated me as i was reading about it: The reality aspect in this game is so great, that it’s actually your own career that you’re playing. You start out in the high-school of your choice, where you participate in national playoffs against adjacent high-schools. You get picked up by scouts who offer you college scholarships. I would play if i thought i had a shadow of a chance to understand how to (-:

US Elections 2008

Filed under: US Presidential Elections — Yoav Pridor @ 8:37 pm
This is my second “US Elections 2008” post. I skipped last week for good a reason, which I will get to on the second part of the post (Don’t go directly to the second part! There’s a reason why its second. Well you went anyway – that’s very mature (-:).
Lets first take a look at the past weeks “Buzz Graphs”. I chose not to include Al Gore this time. I figure we should let him decide to run, before we count him in. Another change from the previous post is that I put in “Hillary” instead of “Hillary Clinton”. This is because senator Clinton, is usually referred to, in discussions, as Hillary. I checked how many times the term “Hillary” is mentioned with no connection to Mrs. Clinton, and found no such cases. Here are the graphs:

Democratic Hopefuls

Dynamic Chart – Last 7 Days

Republican Hopefuls

Snapshot 13.7.2007-19.7.2007
Dynamic Chart – Last 7 Days

Hillary and the “Swift Boat”

Senator Hillary Clinton is leading the buzz count on the democrat’s side. The reason for the lead is mainly the fact that she is the democrat’s leading runner so fittingly, she is mentioned in many of the discussions on the elections topic. One term that seemed to appear together with Hillary in many discussions was “Swift Boat”. This term was coined in connection with allegations against John Kerry in the 2004 elections. This time, the term is being used again because of a video that hit the web a few days ago. The video is a full fledged attack on Rudy Giuliani, by New York Fire Fighters. This video was linked to in discussions under the headline “Swift boating Rudy“.
What does this have to do with Hillary? Not much, but she is mentioned in most of these discussions.

The Ron Paul Phenomenon

I am following the online discussion regarding the US Presidential race, on a daily basis. My basic expectation is that the online discussion will be a mirror image of what is portrayed in the media, on the blog-sphere and in the polls. That’s why I was very surprised to find extreme differences between the different platforms.
The most over whelming difference is on the republican side, where Ron Paul has a distinct lead in the forum-sphere, but is not doing so well on mainstream media and not even on the blog-sphere. This difference bothered me last week so I decided to dig in to it.
I found out that the Ron Paul buzz was caused by Three main factors:

  1. Ron Paul is a controversial candidate. There is always something he said that causes discussion-sphere mayhem. This week it was his appearance on the Alex Jones radio show , where he said “the country is in “great danger” of the U.S. government staging a terrorist attack or a Gulf of Tonkin style provocation, as the war in Iraq continues to deteriorate. “. This was easy to identify because the phrase “Gulf of Tonkin” was a popular one, in Ron Paul related discussions.
  2. Ron Paul is actively carrying out a web campaign over user generate content platforms. Duncan Riley wrote a great post about it on TechCrunch. Riley illustrates how Ron Paul’s campaign is maybe the first political campaign of its kind, and is definitely different from that of the other candidates.
  3. It seems that Ron Paul is mentioned in many discussions without any relevance to the discussion topic. I found that in some cases somebody intentionally tries to initiate a Ron Paul discussion. Look at this discussion on Gaia Online – The kids didn’t know what hit them.
In other cases, a lot of people use a list of “Ron Paul Facts”, copied from the Ron Paul site, and paste them into discussions. So the same text, repeats itself many times. Are people doing this voluntarily or is someone behind this? I guess we’ll never know. Here are some links to discussions where this list appears (It’s the same list that’s on Gaia).

Weekly Buzz

Filed under: Buzz — Yoav Pridor @ 12:56 pm
When people talk, it means that there’s something going on. Sometimes, the chatter is caused by events which are also highlighted by the media, but sometimes the buzz proves that the headlines don’t always reflect the things which are important to people.
The past week’s online discussion had a bit of both:

Lady Bird

On Wednesday, July 11th, Ms. Claudia Alta Taylor (Lady Bird) Johnson, the former first lady of the United States and the wife of the late president Lyndon B. Johnson, Died of natural causes, at the age of 94.
If you live in the states, and even if not, you probably heard all about it on the news. Fittingly, the forums and discussion groups paid tribute to who must have been a very special lady. The term “Lady Bird” shot up to the top of the Omgili Buzz Cloud, which indicates that this was a very popular topic on the discussion sphere.
There were Two terms which were associated with Lady Bird more than others:

  1. Road Beautification – As First Lady, Johnson started a capital beautification project (Society for a More Beautiful National Capital) to improve physical conditions in Washington, D.C., both for residents and tourists. Her efforts inspired similar programs throughout the country. She was also instrumental in promoting the Highway Beautification Act, which sought to beautify the nation’s highway system by limiting Billboards and by planting roadside areas.
  2. The National Wildflower Research Center – was founded in 1982 by Mrs. Johnson and actress Helen Hayes and is now known as Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and is officially a component of the University of Texas at Austin.

Guitar Hero

Two of the biggest chatter topics of the past week were “Guitar Hero” and “Resident Evil”. These were definitely not mainstream media headline topics, but for the gaming community, which is evidently a big one, these were the top issues. The event that drove the gaming discussion was the E3 Media & Business Summit that took place in Santa Monica on July 11th-13th. This is a special media event for the gaming industry. Being what it is, it panned out a truckload of announcements which resonated in the discussion sphere.

Console Games
Dynamic Chart – Past Month

This weeks buzz cloud had a wide representation for many other video games and gaming platforms, some of which were:
Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Xbox Live, Playstation 3, Mario Galaxy, Sims 2, GTA IV, Tomb Raider, Rock Band, Unreal Tournament 3, Silent Hill 5, Nintendo DS, Ace Combat 6, Heavenly Sword, Guitar Hero III, Halo 2, Battlefield 2.
That’s a big part of the cloud!
Well, I’m not a big gamer, but I had a chance to play a little “Guitar Hero” at my brother’s house and i wanna tell you – It’s Addictive. I couldn’t stop, even though, in the beginning I was getting Booed by the crowd. One more observation about the game is that its really funny to watch someone else play. Imagine someone standing there, holding a little plastic guitar, with no strings, moving their body and twitching their face, much like rock guitarists do when they take center stage for a solo. Anyway, try it, its great.
The news about Resident Evil is the the upcoming launch of “Resident Evil 5”. The trailer for the game was launched this week, and from what I read, its something to look forward to. Its expected to launch sometime in 2008.
